Help for children, young people and adults

Youth Turn provides youth care and Wmo support (support under the Dutch Social Support Act) in and around Leiden. This page explains the essentials in English. The rest of our website is in Dutch.

Our main pages in English

What we do

  • Support for children and young people up to 18 (and in some cases up to 23): at home, at school and in the neighbourhood. For example with behaviour problems, autism, ADHD, not going to school, or tension at home.
  • Support for parents with parenting questions.
  • Supervised contact between a parent and a child, when contact is only possible with someone else present.
  • Intensive family support, to prevent a child having to live away from home, or to help a child come back home.
  • Support and day activities for adults, at home or at our centre on Valkenpad in Leiden.

Who pays

Your municipality pays; you do not pay us directly. For a child you need a referral: from your GP (huisarts), from the youth team of your municipality (gemeente), or from a certified youth protection organisation (gecertificeerde instelling). For an adult you need a written decision (beschikking) from the municipality, saying which support you may receive. For Wmo support the municipality may ask you to pay a contribution towards the cost (eigen bijdrage). You pay this to the CAK, the national office that collects it, not to us.

Not sure which route applies to you? Call us and we will work it out together.

Your own language

Between them, our support workers speak a number of languages. Tell us which language you speak and we will try to find a support worker who speaks it. You are always welcome to bring someone you trust to translate for you, to any meeting.

How to apply

Call 071 - 234 01 32 on weekdays between 9:00 and 17:00, or email aanmelden@youthturn.nl. You can also use our application form, which is in Dutch. When your application is complete, you will hear from us within five working days.

Your privacy and safety

What you tell us stays with us. We only share information with others if you give permission, or if the law requires us to. If we are worried about the safety of a child, we follow the Meldcode: the step-by-step plan that Dutch law requires care organisations to follow when they suspect abuse or domestic violence. We discuss our concerns with you first, unless that would put a child in danger.

If you are not satisfied

Tell your support worker first; often one conversation is enough. Is it not resolved, or would you rather not talk to them about it? Email klachten@youthturn.nl. Write what happened, when, and what you would like. Your complaint is never handled by the person you are complaining about. You will get a confirmation within five working days.

You can also ask for free help from the independent complaints officer at Klachtenportaal Zorg, the outside organisation that handles complaints about us: 0228 - 32 22 05, on weekdays from 9:00 to 12:00. If you or your child receives youth care (jeugdhulp), you can also contact Jeugdstem, which offers a free, independent confidential adviser (vertrouwenspersoon): 088 - 555 10 00. Making a complaint is free, and it will never affect the support you receive.

In an emergency

Youth Turn is not a crisis service. We are available on weekdays from 9:00 to 17:00.

  • Immediate danger: call 112.
  • If you are thinking about suicide: call 113 or 0800-0113. Free, day and night.
  • If you are worried about violence or abuse at home: call Veilig Thuis, the national advice and reporting centre for domestic violence and child abuse, on 0800-2000. Free, day and night.
  • Outside our hours: call your own GP. In the evening, at night and at the weekend, call the out-of-hours GP service (huisartsenpost).
